What are the hiring qualifications for the School Age Care (SAC) staff?
SAC Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors must have a four year college degree with an education or related major or a comparable combination of college education and child care employment experience. All non-supervisor staff must have at least 460 hours of full time verified experience working with children. You can see the full requirements here.
What safety protocols are implemented in the Child Care programs?
The Community Schools Childcare programs have been running all childcare options (infant care, preschool, school-age and summer camps) continuously since the pandemic began. We align with the school district guidance to ensure that safety protocols are consistent at all of our sites.
As a part of our high quality practices we are on heightened alert for symptoms and enacting a more stringent sick policy to avoid having sick children or children with potential contagious symptoms in the program. Per health department requirement, our staff members are frequently cleaning and disinfecting all spaces and objects that are used during programs. Increased frequency of handwashing for staff and children throughout the day. If you have been asked to quarantine because of possible exposure to COVID, do not enter our buildings or take part in your enrolled programs. We appreciate your compliance with this very important policy.
Guidance and regulations may change, please check back regularly for updates.
Which spaces in each school will SAC be able to use?
School Age Care sites will be licensed to use the cafeteria, all outdoor spaces, and the library at all sites, unless otherwise specified. We will have exclusive use of the staff lounge for disinfecting toys in accordance with health requirements as well as food storage and medication storage in a designated refrigerator.
What are the child care absence policies?
No refunds or credits will be given for school closings, days off, sick days, snow days, COVID or other health quarantines, or family vacation days. Regular tuition and fees will be charged for all absences. This policy is in place because the cost for staff and programming remains the same when children are absent.
What will pick up and drop off look like? Will I come into the building to drop off each day?
Parents will drop their children at the front entrance to the school, and only children will be allowed inside the building. All child care sites will use a secure cell phone for entry and pickup and to limit front office staff workload. Parent fobs will be discontinued. No visitors or volunteers are allowed in the school.
What will the day look like?
What is the School Age Care procedure if BVSD has a two-hour delayed start?
My child attends school in another school district. Are they eligible to attend the BVSD school age care program?
Which entity licenses the School Age Care program?
Where can I find more detailed information about BVSD's Child Care programs?
BVSD Community Schools is committed to ensuring every family in need of child care receives that care. We will work with families on an individual basis during this ever-changing and challenging time. Please contact us at bvsd.childcare@bvsd.org with any questions. We have a bilingual specialist on staff to support our Spanish speaking families.
The BVSD Community Schools Licensed Child Care Handbook provides relevant links, protocols and other details for ALL licensed child care programs (EC, PSE, SAC, ECE) operating in BVSD schools. Our partners, including Boulder County Public Health and Children's Hospital also have access to this handbook.
How are the child care monthly rates determined?
How can I find more CCAP information?
The Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) provides financial assistance to eligible low-income families who need child care benefits for children from birth to age 12. If you are eligible, a portion of the total child care cost will be paid. You can find the CCAP checklist to submit to BVSD Child Care here. For information about CCAP denials and the appeals process, click here.
ADA Accommodations
BVSD assures equal access to after school programs and extracurricular activities for students with disabilities. IEPs do not automatically apply to these programs, so the School District conducts an individualized inquiry about the student’s needs and whether there are reasonable modifications, aids or services that could be provided to allow the student an equal opportunity for participation in the program or activity. These discussions can occur in an IEP meeting, a Section 504 meeting or in an individualized discussion between a coach or activity leader and a parent.
If you believe your student requires modifications or accommodations to access a BVSD School Age Care program, please email jasmine.bailon@bvsd.org.
How does BVSD Community Schools determine pricing for its programs?
Do BVSD Employees receive a discount for Child Care programs?
Does a child need to be potty trained to attend the SAC program?
Yes. The SAC program is unable to enroll children that require toileting assistance on a regular basis. We operare the before and after school programming in multipurpose spaces that do not house easy access to bathrooms, or sanitary diaper changing spaces that allow for privacy and proper health practices to be followed. Regular bathroom supports require a child care staff member to leave the supervision of other children and violate state licensing rules and regulations for maintaining a ratio of 1:15 as a licensed provider. A child should refrain from enrolling in SAC until they are able to independently go to the bathroom without the assistance of staff.
Are there behaviors that could lead to a child being terminated or suspended from the program?
All students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the school's function as an educational facility. Steps are taken for serious behavior problems which include written reports, behavior contracts, additional positive reinforcement techniques, and discussions with parents to create a plan for change. All steps taken will be documented prior to the suspension/expulsion of a child due to behavior concerns.
In the rare occasion when the situation cannot be resolved, suspension/expulsion of the child from the program may occur. Behavioral issues following a suspension will be reviewed by the programs Coordinator, Child Care Manager and may include additional district level leadership which could result in the inability to attend our programs. Our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants.
A child's enrollment may be terminated or suspended immediately for the following reasons:
- Leaving the direct supervision of a staff person, referred to as eloping or running, directly compromising the staff's ability to maintain child care licensing rules and regulation required ratios as a licensed provider
- Behavior by a child that poses a threat to the safety of him/herself or others; including directly disobeying a staff person.
- Behavior by a child that is continually disruptive to the program and it’s participants and staff
- Destruction to the property of the program, school, staff or peers
- Behavior by a parent which is disrespectful to staff, children or community
- Non-payment, late payment or return of payments by financial institution
Why does a child need to wait until their 5th birthday to attend SAC?
We operate under the Department of Early Childhood (DEC) rules and regulations as a licensed childcare provider, this guidance often varies from the traditional school days capabilities and is more strict on allowable ratios and group sizes. We provide service to a mixed age group 5 years to 16 years of age, and this allows a 1 adult per 15 children ratio. Serving even one child in our program any number of days before their 5th birthday reduces the number of children allowed in our programs. This is because 4-year-olds need to adhere to a ratio of 1 adult per 12 children while they are in attendance at any time.
This would change our staffing needs while any children under age 5 are in our program, therefore we wait until a child's 5th birthday to allow attendance.
How do BVSD Child Care waitlists work?
If a child care site is at capacity and additional students still need care, a waitlist is created for that site. Parents are directed to an online form to record their contact information and days of care needed. The waitlist is only viewable by Child Care registration staff, and submissions are prioritized by timestamp.
When space becomes available at the site, families will be contacted in the order they appear on the list. Once an offer for enrollment is made, parents have two weeks to accept their spot. The Child Care registration staff will make three attempts via email and phone calls to confirm or pass on a slot. Slots cannot be held for future enrollment, and if a family does not respond after 3 attempts in this two weeks, the parent will be removed from the waitlist due to no response.
Families are asked to notify the Child Care registration staff if they have found other child care arrangements and no longer wish to remain on the waitlist.
